The author presents an interesting paper on the instances of chopping of ones nose, described in kannada and Tamil literature (Poems and Vachanas), inscriptions, history etc., The explanations connected with poetics has also been furnished with citations. It is a sort of punishment in vogue even in the times of Koutilya and especially during medieval wars. The instances of the punishment indicated in Mysore war are more interesting to note.
